Elizabeth Mae (Thompson) Kenniston

WEST CORNWALL – Elizabeth Mae (Thompson) Kenniston, 81, of West Cornwall, passed away on March 17, 2012, at Hartford Hospital surrounded by her family. Elizabeth was born Nov. 16, 1930, in New Milford, Conn., to the late Lena (Barley) and Earle R. Thompson Sr. She was the wife of the late Ernest H. Kenniston, whom she married on April 29, 1950. She was a graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Elizabeth was employed for more than 25 years at the National Iron Bank, serving for some of those years as branch manager. She was an active member of The Women’s Society of Cornwall where she was treasurer and president. She worked for Marvelwood School in the business office. She enjoyed gardening and going to tag sales. Elizabeth is survived by her sons, Edward and his wife, Geralyn, and Donald, both of West Cornwall; her grandchildren, Jennifer Kenniston and Erik Kenniston of West Cornwall and Janna Kenniston and her husband, Jeremy Rice, of San Jose, Calif.; her great-grandsons, Donovan and Noah McCray of West Cornwall; her brothers, Earle Thompson Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, and Eugene Thompson of Bethlehem, Conn.; her sisters, Elraea Rudzavice and her husband, John, of Bethlehem, Elinor Bienevue and her husband, Robert, of Bernhands Bay, N.Y., and Elena Ozarawski of Torrington; her very best friend, Anita Hurlburt of Cornwall; and several beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Everett Thompson. Calling hours will be Thursday, March 22, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon. All other services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to The Women’s Society of Cornwall Scholarship Fund, c/o United Church of Christ, 8 Bolton Hill Road, Cornwall, CT 06753.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
