A Little Weekend Music

As usual, much good music is coming to our region. Let’s start in our backyard at The Hotchkiss School, where the American Brass Quintet takes the stage for a free concert at Elfers Hall on March 25, at 4 p.m. Go to www.hotchkiss.org/arts or call 860-435-4423 for information. Also, ragtime and blues icon Leon Redbone is on our calendar. Like many people, I was first introduced to him through his “Saturday Night Live” appearances in the 1970s. I didn’t totally get him at the time, but over the years I’ve come to adore his crackly, basso voice and old-time throwback tunes like “Salty Dog.” Redbone will be at the Towne Crier in Pawling, NY, with guest Alan Goodman on Saturday, March 24, at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Go to www.townecrier.com or call 845-855-1330 for tickets. Two great performances in one weekend, and you can catch them both.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
