WINSTED — The Descendants, a jazz quartet, will play a concert on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 9:30 p.m. at the Gilson Cafe and Cinema. The band has been performing for more than a month at the Gilson, starting after the theater finishes playing movies for the night. The music blends with the Gilson’s historic interior, including checkered floors, plush theater seats and tables where cocktails and food are served to patrons. The second floor of the theater is spacious and easily accommodates a nightclub audience.Trombonist Peter McEachern said the band has been playing at the Gilson off and on for more than a decade.“The Gilson is a great venue, and we get plenty of supporters of our music,” McEachern said. “As far as I’m concerned, jazz never left the Gilson, it only took a break.”Gilson owner Alan Nero said he plans to book The Descendants and other musicians in the future.“We want people to come out to support live music in Winsted,” Nero said. “We want to have a world class appeal, and we are on the lookout for new musical talent.”The Descendants will be taking a break from performing at The Gilson after this Saturday’s concert, but will return in late March.Tickets for the concert are $10 and only available to adults 21 and older. The Gilson Cafe and Cinema is located at 354 Main St.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
