Read Aloud Day held in school district

WINSTED — The 21st Read Aloud Day was held across the state on Wednesday, Feb. 8.According to a press release issued by the Winchester School District, more than 400 volunteers read books to more than 7,000 students in 18 towns and 27 schools.At Pearson School, volunteers came to read the book “Eddie Shapes Up” by former New York City Mayor Ed Koch.The book tells a tale about Koch’s childhood and how important it is to be physically fit. The theme for this year’s event was physical fitness and good health.Hinsdale Elementary School Principal Matt O’Connell went to Pearson to read to the fifth-grade class taught by his father, Neil O’Connell.“I remember as a kid coming into his class and watching him teach,” Matt O’Connell said. “Children are so used to having teachers read to them. This is a special day because adults from the community come in and show that reading is important for everybody.”Pearson reading teacher Julie Prignano said that students were excited to see people from the community coming in to read to them.“Reading is absolutely important, and it’s important for adults to show that to them,” Prignano said. “It’s important for adults to spread the message about how reading is essential to everyone’s life.”

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
