Margaret Patricia Morgan

NORTH CANAAN — Margaret Patricia Morgan, 87, of North Canaan died Dec. 7, 2011, at Sharon Hospital. Margaret was born Dec. 11, 1923, in Lakeville, the daughter of the late Marguerite (Zimmerman) and John Patrick Morgan. She lived virtually her entire life at 254 West Main St. in North Canaan.Margaret was a registered nurse who graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing. She served The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville as the head nurse of the school infirmary from 1948 until her retirement in 2004. She loved her time at Hotchkiss, and the students with whom she worked. She also enjoyed visiting with her many friends and taking trips to Cape Cod. Margaret was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in North Canaan.Margaret is survived by her nephew, John Richard “Rick” Phair and his wife, Sandra, of Manchester, Conn.; her brother-in-law, Richard James Phair, of North Canaan; her two grandnephews, Jonathan Morgan Phair and his wife, Cheryl, of Stamford, Conn., and Brian Richard Phair and his wife, Sarah, of Waltham, Mass. Margaret was predeceased by her longtime companion, William Christian Michel Jr.; and her sister, Mary Elizabeth (Morgan) Phair. A Mass of Christian burial was held Dec. 10 at St. Joseph’s Church with burial in Mountain View Cemetery in North Canaan. Memorial donations may be sent to The Hotchkiss School, 11 Interlaken Road, Lakeville, CT 06039-2130.The Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan has charge of arrangements.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
