From gift cards to an hour on the radio

SHARON — Still concerned over the sluggish economy, many people want to purchase holiday gifts made in the U.S.A. And many consumers are becoming more aware of the value of purchasing gifts at local, independent merchants rather than at chain stores. Shopping locally can increase a sense of community; and of course, the business profits remain here.In Sharon, a number of retailers offer a variety of domestically made products, including a number that are specific to the Northwest Corner. Robin Hood Radio, WHDD AM and FM, is the nation’s smallest NPR station. As a non-commercial radio station, it depends on listener support for its operating budget. Marshall Miles and Jill Goodman, the station’s co-founders, have come up with a unique way to thank listeners for their donations at the holiday season, and it’s an idea which makes an excellent and unexpected holiday gift. A $100 tax-deductible donation to Robin Hood Radio, entitles the donor (or a gift recipient) to become a WHDD on-air radio personality for an hour.Donations can be mailed to WHDD/Robin Hood Radio, 67 Main St., Sharon CT 06069; they can be sent online at www.robinhoodradio.com or made by telephone at 860-364-4640. When making the donation, ask for the special holiday “on-air” gift.L’s Hair Studio, 81 Main St., is offering a holiday special. Gift certificates (“L’s Cash”) are regularly $10 each. For the holiday season, owner Linda Peck is offering three gift certificates for $25, a $5 savings. The certificates are valid for any hair care service at the studio. To purchase L’s Cash, come into the studio during business hours or call 860-364-5467. L’s Hair Studio is open Tuesday through Saturday. Hours are posted on the website at www.lshairstudio.com.The Sharon Pharmacy, still owned and operated by the Heacox family, celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. In addition to pharmacy goods, the store also sells gift items, including many that are made in the U.S.There are also affordably priced gift cards and wrapping paper as well as gift certificates. The pharmacy is open seven days a week. For more information, call 860-364-5272.The Black Goose restaurant in the plaza is open six days each week, closed Mondays. Breakfast and lunch are available Tuesday through Sunday. Dinner is served Wednesday through Saturday. The restaurant offers six to eight specials each day. A new fall menu was introduced this week. As a holiday thank you to his customers, owner Robert Caeners is offering a free dessert with the purchase of a $50 gift certificate.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
