Historic house holiday tour is on Dec. 4

FALLS VILLAGE — The Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society will offer a Holiday Historic House Tour on Sunday, Dec. 4. The tour will begin with a welcome and introduction to the five houses on the tour at P.D. Walsh’s Country Store (107 Main St.) at 11:30 a.m. At noon, tour pass holders may begin their self-guided tour with guidance from the society’s brochure and map. The tour coincides with the village’s annual tree lighting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. and visit from Santa Claus later in the day. For the day, tour guests are encouraged to stop for a snack or meal at Toymaker’s Cafe (open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the Falls Village Inn (brunch 11 a.m to 3 p.m. and dinner, 5 to 10 p.m.). When guests show their tour tickets, a portion of the proceeds from each meal will benefit the Historical Society. Proceeds from the tour will help replenish funds of the Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society. The society spent $11,000 to replace the platform roof at the Falls Village Railroad Depot that collapsed under the weight of heavy snows earlier this year. Insurance would not cover this expense. Each home on the tour will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Protective shoe covers will be available at each home. The houses on the tour are not wheelchair accessible and strollers are not permitted inside. The Historic House Tour is Sunday, Dec. 4 (snow date Sunday, Dec. 11). Tickets are $20. Children 8 to 16 are free. Tickets are available at P.D. Walsh’s Country Store, Toymaker’s Cafe, The Falls Village Inn, Jacobs’ Garage, Crossroads Deli, D.M. Hunt Library, Town Hall or by calling the Historical Society at 860-824-8226. The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
