Four accused of poaching in Sharon

SHARON — An ongoing investigation into illegal hunting on Sharon Mountain netted four arrests Oct. 8. Environmental Conservation (EnCon) police officers from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) have conducted surveillance for the past several deer hunting seasons. Complaints were coming from local residents about vehicles with Massachusetts plates dropping off and picking up people wearing camouflage clothing along wooded areas and private estates.No permission had been granted by property owners to hunt there.Before dawn on Oct. 8, EnCon officers observed a van with Massachusetts plates in that area. They watched while, sometime after sunrise, three men emerged from private property wearing full camouflage clothing and carrying archery hunting gear.The officers apprehended and subsequently arrested James Salzarulo, 41, and Leon McClusky, 35, both of Pittsfield, Mass. and Jason Barnaby, 36, of Peru, Mass.. They were each charged with bow hunting without dated written consent. Barnaby was alleged to have killed a deer and was additionally charged with illegal deer hunting.Vincent Hottel, 29, of Pittsfield, was the van driver. He was charged with conspiracy to commit criminal trespass.All four were released on bond and are scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court Oct. 24.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
