A beautiful day for the Bearcat 5K

LAKEVILLE — The Hotchkiss School and the Housatonic Youth Service Bureau (HYSB) held the Bearcat 5K Cross Country Challenge on the Hotchkiss campus in Lakeville on Sunday, Oct. 9. The event was scheduled to coincide with the annual Fall Festival in Salisbury.It was a beautiful day for the races and attendant festivities, including children’s activities, crafts, birds of prey demonstrations and more.For the children’s 1K race, Ellie Traggio, 8, of Sharon came in first with a time of 4:36. In second was Annika Oostenink, 12, of Lakeville, 4:37; and in third was Jillian Cudney, 10, of Dover Plains, N.Y., 4:39.James Boeding, 19, of Millerton took first in the 5K with a time of 19:36. In second was Avery Baldwin, 16, of Lakeville, 19:51; and in third was Jonathan Delmore, 37, of Warren, 20:44. The youngest racers were Keaton Terrall of Cornwall Bridge, Aron Ladanyi of Lakeville and Elizabeth Smith of Pawling, N.Y., all 5 years old. The oldest racers were 70-year-olds Cicily Hajek of Sharon and Nathaniel Floyd of Lakeville.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”

A five-time Grammy winner, Cray has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and earned The Americana Music Awards Lifetime Achievement for Performance. He has played with blues and rock icons including Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and many more.
