Six vying for three Board of Ed seats

WINSTED — On Tuesday, Nov. 8, municipal elections will be held for town government positions for the Board of Selectmen, town clerk, Board of Education and constables. Some residents may find the school board election to be the most confusing, so here is a brief summary:For the Board of Education, four terms are ending this fall, but residents will only be allowed to vote for candidates for three of the open seats.Former board Chairman Kathleen O’Brien resigned on Aug. 9, but because she resigned after the deadline for candidates to register, her position will be filled by the new Board of Education in November. The remaining three open seats are being contested by six candidates.Current board member Monique Parks-Abreu was chosen by the board on Sept. 8 to serve the rest of O’Brien’s term as a regular member. Susan Hoffnagle was chosen to serve the rest of the current term as chairman.Abreu is running as a Democrat for a four-year term.Raymond Neal resigned his seat on the board on June 20.Neal’s term is up this year, and he is not seeking re-election.Current board member Mari-Ellen Pratt Valyo was elected on July 12 to serve the rest of Neal’s term.She is running for a four-year term as a petitioning candidate.Current board Chairman Susan Hoffnagle, who is a Democrat, is running again for a four-year term.James DiVita’s term as a Board of Education member is up, but he has chosen not to run again.Instead, he is running for a seat on the Board of Selectmen.Paul O’Meara’s term as a member of the board is also up, but he has decided not to run for re-election and not to run at all for a town government position this year.Since Democratic candidate Brian Shaughnessy is unopposed as a candidate for a two-year term, he is assured a seat on the board.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
