Millbrook students attend Rotary’s summer camp

MILLBROOK — Millbrook High School students Tommy Cummings, Kyla Karten, Emily Reid and Esteban Vega were selected by the Millbrook Rotary Club to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp this summer at Mount St. Mary’s College. The students spoke at the club’s lunch meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 14, about their experiences at the camp. All four participants described attending the camp as “the best experience of my life.” Based on interests, they were assigned to work in diverse groups from engineering and creative athletics to off-Broadway and chorus. Outside of each one’s groups, dancing and sharing their ideas during “My Two Cents” sessions ranked among the students’ favorites. They formed friendships with RYLA students from other clubs in Rotary District 7210, which covers eight upstate New York counties, and have plans to keep in contact. As a testament to the positive experience at the camp, they asked the club if it would support their applications to return to the camp next summer as counselors. The RYLA is one of many programs for young people that the club supports along with dictionaries for third grade, books for eighth grade, school supplies program, scholarships for graduating seniors and Rotary Youth Exchange. The Millbrook Rotary Club meets for lunch on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. at Copperfield’s Restaurant. Lunch guests are welcome. Cost of lunch is $15. The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
