Sept. 11 memorial parade

PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plains Hose Company will hold a parade in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The parade will remember the civilians and service people who lost their lives due to the attacks.The hose company is inviting members of the public to join in the march from the fire department headquarters at 7 Lake Road to the Seymour Smith Elementary School.The parade’s route will be roughly a half-mile in length.The fire department will open on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. for light refreshments. Memorabilia will also be on display. The march will begin at 4 p.m.An hour-long ceremony at the school will follow the parade. Guest speakers expected at the event include town Supervisor Gregg Pulver, Dutchess County Sheriff Adrian “Butch” Anderson and Assemblyman Marc Molinaro.“We’re just trying to show respect on the 10th anniversary to those who were lost,” said 1st Lt. Brian Walsh of the Pine Plains Hose Company, noting that the parade will also honor the soldiers who are currently fighting for freedom in the war that was spurred by the Sept. 11 attacks.Walsh said that the memorial parade will “show the United States of America as they are, together, as one,” and allowing the public to participate gives people the opportunity to show that they are behind their country and their service members.“I hope to see everybody there,” he said, “to show the true colors of the United States.”Walsh said that the fire department plans to make this parade an annual event.For more information about the day’s celebrations, call the hose company at 518-398-1311.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
