Tractor Mac and his Cornwall adventure

CORNWALL —Tractor Mac, a favorite visitor to the Cornwall Farm Market, returned on Saturday, Aug. 27, with the ninth book in the series about his adventures.Author and illustrator Billy Steers lives in Roxbury with his family. The adventures of Tractor Mac and his farm buddies are based on the bedtime stories he made up for his sons when they were little. The first was published in 1999. Since then, he has added titles such as “Tractor Mac Builds a Barn” and “Tractor Mac Saves Christmas.” “Tractor Mac, You’re a Winner,” set at the “Bridgeriver Fair” is “loosely based” on the Bridgewater Country Fair, the author said. The highlight of his visits to Cornwall is a chance for youngsters to climb on the real Tractor Mac, a bright red 1948 Farmall Cub with eyeballs for headlights and a mouth for a grill. It was once featured on the cover of Popular Mechanics. When not coming up with new plot lines for his characters (including Mac, Sibley, Fetch, Small Fred, Carl and Deke), Steers is a commercial airline pilot. “It all started with stories I told to my kids, so whatever I make on the books goes to their college funds,” Steers said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
