Library walkathon

The committee planning Elinor’s Walk to Support the Roeliff Jansen Community Library met recently at the Roeliff Jansen Park to check out the walking trails that will make up much of the route of the Sunday,  Aug.  28, 5K Walkathon.

COPAKE — Roe Jan area residents are invited to join a 5K walkathon, Elinor’s Walk to Support the Library, on Sunday, Aug. 28, in honor of the Roeliff Jansen Community Library. This non-competitive event, which walkers can start any time between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., will raise funds to enhance the library’s programs, collections and building.

Walkers can sign up online at www.roejanlibrary.org and gather pledges from friends and family online or pick up a pledge form at the library. Pledge forms are also available on bulletin boards in post offices and stores throughout Ancram, Copake and Hillsdale — the communities the library serves.

Participants are being asked to walk in memory of Elinor Metler, who was the founder of the Roe Jan Independent newspaper, the driving force behind the Harlem Valley Rail Trail and a passionate library supporter. Her focus was always on improving life in the Roe Jan area.

Walkers will earn incentives based on how much money they raise and there will be recognition for the top earning individuals and teams. Walkers who raise at least $200 will earn a free ticket to Barbecue and Boogie , the library’s annual barbecue, which takes place at the Roe Jan Park on the same day from noon to 3:30 p.m.

The 5K walk will start in the parking lot of Eastern States Well Drillers at 8960 Route 22,  just  south of the new library. The route follows Yonderview Road to School Road to the Copake Highway Garage property. From there it connects to the well-marked walking trails of the Roeliff Jansen Park. The finish line is in the park.

Virtual walkers, those who for whatever reason can’t make the walk on Aug. 28, are welcome to register and qualify for all incentives.

“Elinor’s Walk to Support the Library is a wonderful opportunity for everyone connected with the library — trustees, staff, volunteers and patrons — to honor a woman who never sought accolades or praise, but who would be so pleased at this outpouring of support for the library she loved and helped build,” said Howard Van Lenten, president of the library’s board of trustees.

Local businesses that are interested in sponsoring the walkathon should contact volunteer Jill Sims-Elster, manager at First Niagara Bank, at 518-325-8100.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
