Tree planted at elementary school honors Glennon

NORTH CANAAN — It was a day of mixed emotions for those gathered at a tree planting in honor of Tom Glennon, retired science teacher from North Canaan Elementary School, on Thursday, July 28, in a courtyard at the school. Glennon died at his home in Florida on July 21, but there was no doubt that his spirit was there with the crowd of about 50 people who remembered him and his generosity and wisdom as a teacher and mentor.Among those on hand were the five men who traveled with Glennon cross-country in 1962, on what all would describe as the trip of a lifetime. Their names are inscribed on the plaque beneath the tree, along with Glennon’s. Rich Donati, one of the travelers, said that Glennon just had a spark that ignited things, not only related to education but also to life. That spark had affected all in the crowd at one time or another in their lives, and they were glad to recognize it with the ceremony and tree planting. The tree planting was planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1962 trip, but was scheduled a year early because of Glennon’s failing health. He had not ever been expected to attend, and while some would say it was coincidence that he died last week, it could also be seen as one more unselfish act on his part. Glennon knew “the boys” would be together, so could offer one another support during a celebration of his life and reminisce about their profound adventure together so long ago.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
