Edward Zionce

NORTH CANAAN — Edward Zionce, 93, of Burlington, Conn., husband of the late Florence (Konopka) Zionce, died July 23, 2011, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Nov. 13, 1917, the son of the late Katherine (Kochan) and Joseph Zionce and lived in Burlington for more than 60 years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division. He entered active service in 1942, and served in several European campaigns. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars along with other military decorations. Ed worked for Connecticut Spring as a setup man until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Gildo Consolini VFW Post in Avon, the American Legion, the Purple Heart Association and St. Patrick’s Church in Collinsville. He is remembered by his family as an avid Red Sox fan and someone who enjoyed mowing the lawn and listening to polkas.Ed is survived by his son, Richard, and daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Gundlach, of Norfolk; his daughter, Barbara Zionce of Easton; his sister, Josephine Konopka of Burlington; his brother-in-law, John Kostrisak of Avon; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jennie Kostrisak; and three brothers, Stanley, Walter and John. A graveside service and burial was held July 27 in Collinsville.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 99 South Canaan Road, North Canaan, CT 06018. Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
