State police arrest four on drug, theft charges

NORTH CANAAN — A car that got the attention of a Connecticut state trooper because of its reported involvement in drug activity in town has led to the arrest of four local people on theft and drug charges.The blue Ford Taurus was spotted waiting in line for gasoline at the Shell station at Route 44 and North Elm Street at about 9 p.m. Sunday, July 24. An investigation revealed driver Tara McDougall, 23, of Railroad Street in North Canaan to be in possession of four plastic bags containing a total of .88 ounces of marijuana, as well as used syringes and heroin wrappers.Shane McGivern, 21, of Meadow Street in Lakeville acted suspiciously, according to arrest records, refusing to show police what was in the hand he held behind his back. When he was removed from the car, police found a used syringe pushed down between the seat cushions.McGivern was found in possession of a box of jewelry he said his grandmother had given him, and credit cards and a checkbook belonging to an employee of LaBonne’s Market in Salisbury. The employee, from Torrington, was brought to the scene. She said she had discovered the items were missing shortly after closing the market earlier that evening. She identified McGivern as the person who had entered the store after it was closed, asking to use a phone. He left when she directed him to do so.Mary Morey, 18, of Old Turnpike Road South in East Canaan was in possession of a credit card in the theft victim’s name. She denied knowing how the card got into her purse.Ronald Redmond, 24, of Prospect Mountain Road in Salisbury admitted to police he had a used syringe and heroin spoon found in his pocket.McGivern was charged with sixth-degree larceny, possession of stolen credit cards and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held in lieu of $2,500 bond and arraigned the following day. He was not released pending a continuance to July 27.McGivern has a prior drug conviction and a case that is sealed.McDougall was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $5,000.She also has a pending case for a speeding ticket issued in June.Morey was charged with possession of a stolen credit card. Bond was set at $1,000.Redmond was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $1,000. He has had numerous prior arrests leading to convictions, including possession of drugs in a school zone, assault, threatening conspiracy to commit larceny, probation violation and failure to appear.Pretrial court dates were set for all for Aug. 8.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
