Lone Oak bikers help wishes come true

NORTH CANAAN — Bikers in studded leather and their chromed pipes were on display at Lone Oak Campsites, but only briefly. After paying an entry fee, checking out an impressive array of donated prizes and perusing a map, they were off on a 120-mile motorcycle ride to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Father’s Day ride — known as Wishes on Wheels — and picnic is one of many events throughout the summer at the campgrounds. The participants have coalesced into a close-knit community of summer friends who take pride in helping others. Last year, they raised $6,200, enough to grant a wish to enrich the life of a child with a life-threatening illness. This year, they raised $2,600. “It’s a great cause and a good time,” said camper/rider Marty Sturgis of Danbury, who enjoys taking his bike to the area’s rougher roads. He has been riding since he was 16, “obviously quite a while,” and was impressed by buddies Dave Ross and Michael Listorti.Ross, from Long Island, brought his brand new Harley Davidson, black with flames painted on the fuel tank, for the ride. Listorti, from Stratford, rented a motorcycle just for the ride. Neither had ridden in years, but both were willing to take on the challenge to raise money for a good cause. Peter Brown of Lone Oak said all of the Make-A-Wish events are open to the public and local support is encouraged. Prizes for the participants were donated by a dozen local and national sponsors.More fundraisers this summer include a Touch-a-Truck day and Tag Sale on Aug. 27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children of all ages will get to explore big rigs, fire engines, police cars, farm equipment and many more types of rolling steel, with guidance from professionals. Admission is a donation; all proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Canaan Fire Company and North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps. For more information, go to www.loneoakcampsites.com.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
