Duo Dara at Congregational church June 11

SHARON — Duo Dara, featuring Keren Schweitzer, flute, and Jason Lippmann, cello, will perform Saturday, June 11, at 8 p.m. at the Sharon Congregational Church. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Sharon Historical Society and Sharon Congregational Church. “Most people assume significant public buildings have enough members to properly support their preservation needs,” said Liz Shapiro, executive director of the historical society. “That is not usually the case, which is true for the historical society and the Congregational church.”This is the first joint event the historical society and the church have put on. Shapiro said neither had enough members to provide the necessary financial support to properly preserve their buildings for the long term. The concert program includes music of Beethoven, J.S. Bach and Heitor Villa Lobos. Both artists are donating their time for the evening. Lippmann joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the 2004-05 season after five years of performing as a member of the New Jersey Symphony orchestra. Schweitzer has performed on several occasions with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and is currently an L.A. Philharmonic teaching artist. She is also the daughter of Sharon resident Dr. Laurence Schweitzer. A reception with the artists will be held at the Sharon Historical Society immediately following the performance.Tickets to the concert, $20 per person, may be purchased in advance by contacting the historical society at 860-364-5688 or sharonhistoricalsociety@yahoo.com.Shapiro said the organizers are trying to keep tickets prices relatively low so families can use this event as a way to introduce their children to classical and modern music. She also said families with many children can call to obtain a special reduced price.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
