Spring break not for everyone this year

WINSTED — Students from The Gilbert School will enjoy a week’s vacation this month, April 11 through 15, but the time off will not be shared by students in the K-8 system, who faced more snow-related closures this year. The difference in scheduling results from lost school days in February, when the town’s public schools were forced to close because of accumulated snow on rooftops, which the town’s building inspector, Marc Melanson, said was in excess of the maximum allowable weight. Heavy snow had resulted in roof collapses in other towns across the state. The Winchester Board of Education approved an emergency expenditure of $60,000 to remove snow from the public school rooftops, but local elementary schools remained closed from Feb. 4 to 11. Classrooms reopened on Valentine’s Day.Days missed in February will be made up by the town’s public schools while Gilbert is on vacation. High school students will return to classes at Gilbert Monday, April 18.Public school students will get a four-day break on Easter weekend, as there are no classes on Good Friday, April 22, or on Monday, April 25, when teachers’ conferences are scheduled.Gilbert students have Good Friday off, but will return to class Monday, April 25.
