Tech Advisory Committee to help avoid meltdowns

KENT — At the request of First Selectman Bruce Adams and with the endorsement of the Board of Selectmen, a Technology Advisory Committee has been formed. The decision to create the new committee was made after the failure of the server that contained the data for every office in Town Hall. The board is comprised of three people: John Worthington, who is the building inspector in Litchfield, Dan O’Neill, who works in the information technology department at New Milford Hospital, and Charlie Taylor, who is responsible for information technology at Kent Center School. The committee cannot make any formal decisions. Its purpose is to advise the Board of Selectmen on technology issues. The committee is currently working on finding ways to appropriately react to and recover from the technology meltdown in Town Hall. They are debating options such as replacing the Town Hall server completely, keeping all Town Hall offices on the existing server or limiting the offices connected to the server to the ones that absolutely need to be. Another task that the committee is tackling is helping to find a new IT company to serve Town Hall. The former company, Lightning PC, was dismissed by Adams on Feb. 7. The reasoning behind the dismissal was Lightning PC’s reluctance to provide Adams with a password necessary to perform a system evaluation on the server. An interim IT person, Bob Leigh of Goshen, has been hired to bridge the gap between the old and the new. The Technology Advisory Committee is currently drafting a request for proposals that will invite professionals to apply for the position.
