Arthur Max Felske

SHARON — Arthur Max Felske, 90, an industrial designer and resident of Sharon, passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 23, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Hartford on Dec. 10, 1920, to Leokadia (Droheim) and Max William Felske.

He served for three-and-a-half years in the Army Air Force during World War II, and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1949.

Mr. Felske pursued a successful career in industrial design, working with leading designers of the time including Raymond Loewy, Henry Dreyfuss and Eliot Noyes.

In later years, he worked for General Electric designing for the housewares division. He was passionate and prolific in his work. He loved his drawing board, creating mid-century modern designs for products that were often patented, improving their look, feel and function.

Arthur lived with his family in Westport  for 32 years and moved to Sharon in 1986, where he spent many joyful years improving his properties, riding on his tractor lawnmower and dreaming up new designs.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughters, Karin Wexler and her husband, James, and Lisa Klein and her husband, John; his son, Peter Felske and his wife, Titi Halle; his beloved grandchildren, Jamie Wexler, Anna Wexler, Kristine Klein and Kate Klein; and  a brother, Richard Norman Felske.

A celebration of his life will be held at his home early in the year. Burial will be in the spring at the Ellsworth Hill Cemetery in Sharon.

Contributions in his name may be made to the Sharon Land Trust, PO Box 1027, Sharon, CT 06069.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
