Sunny Homecoming at Gilbert School

WINSTED — Mostly sunny skies welcomed about 150 alumni and friends back to The Gilbert School campus during Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 23, for the annual Distinguished Alumni awards, followed by a luncheon and the football game against Windsor Locks on Van Why Field.

Before the alumni awards ceremony, a group of graduates and current students gathered for the first Gilbert Alumni Cross-Country Run. It was an invigorating trot on the Gilbert team course. Coffee and donuts were served afterward. Medals were awarded to the top finishers.

“Tom Waterman ’82 won the race in 13:56 over a hilly 2.1-mile course. Freshman Alec Goulet ’14 was the top student in 14:01, said organizer L.J. Briggs ’82.

A special musical performance for Homecoming was given by The Connecticut National Guard Band, which played for the first time with the Gilbert Alumni Band.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
