Housy falls to Northwestern, beats Brookfield

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School volleyball match against Northwestern Regional High school on Friday, Oct. 1, was moved to Housy due to weather conditions.

Northwestern took the match, 3-1, winning games one, two and four, 25-17, 25-12 and 25-20. Housy won game three, 25-22.

For Housy, Danielle Kearns racked up two aces, five kills, seven digs and 10 blocks. Jenna Nardi had 15 aces, eight kills and 12 digs. Megan Williams contributed five aces and three assists while Cassiday Stone had 13 kills and four digs. Ali Perotti added an ace, a dig and eight assists, while Kristen Olsen put up two aces, a kill, three digs and 30 assists.

Housy hosted Brookfield Monday, Oct. 4. The home team took the win, 3-2. Brookfield won game one, 25-22, and game two, 25-23, but Housy came back to take the remaining three games, 25-13, 25-20 and 15-10.

Kearns tallied 13 aces, 15 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Kathryn Marron contributed 10 aces, four kills and a block. Williams added two aces, three kills, three digs and 14 assists while Candice Combuzzi scored four kills. Morgan Lamb had four aces, five kills and seven digs and Wendi Westmark put in six kills and four aces.

Heading into their Tuesday, Oct. 5, game against Gilbert, the girls were 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Berkshire League.   

The team will host a “Dig Pink†match against Lewis Mills Wednesday, Oct. 13. The goal is to raise $500 for the Side Out Foundation, which raises money for breast cancer education. For more information or to donate, visit side-out.org/application/teams/team_page/3448.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
