Village Green development application withdrawn

PINE PLAINS — TomLew of Pine Plains, LLC, has submitted a letter to the town’s Planning Board withdrawing its application for a proposed development to be located behind the Stewart’s Shop on County Route 82.

The “Village Green project, as it was known, was first proposed more than five years ago and consisted of approximately 150 residential units and a variety of commercial and retail uses, according to Planning Board Chairman Rick Butler.

Because of the significant effects that the town’s then-developing zoning laws would have had on the Village Green project and application, the applicant decided to hold off on moving forward with the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) process, which would have been subject to changes made while creating the zoning.

Earlier this year, Butler said, the applicant had requested and received a partial refund of its escrow account, used to reimburse town consultants. It later requested a complete refund of the remaining escrow balance.

The Planning Board requires a written statement be provided to formally withdraw a project’s application. That letter was read and accepted at the board’s Sept. 8 meeting. The request will now be forwarded to the Town Board for final consideration.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
