YMCA Preschool: The best kept secret in town

The Winsted YMCA has a new preschool director, Charmaine Riva of Salisbury, who has completely revamped the preschool program.

Riva recently shared her excitement about the changes to the program. “We completely redid the entire center, adding eight new exciting learning centers and a huge fish tank for the kids to enjoy, she said. She also hopes to add more pets for the center, “maybe a guinea pig in the near future.

The center has also been painted in bright colors, with paintings on all the walls. “It truly looks like a completely different place than when I came here. It’s beautiful — it really is the best-kept secret in town, Riva said.

According to Riva, all new teachers have been hired, including one who is currently enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program at Northwestern Connecticut Community College and who is also observing at the college’s child-care center.

The staff at the center is working to incorporate a music program into their schedule, as well as a weekly visit to the Beardsley Library for story and book time. In addition, the center is, as always, offering swimming lessons during pre-school hours for the children.

Riva is in the process of planning several holiday events to get the word out and show off Winsted’s hidden gem, she said.

For more information or enrollment into the pre-school at the YMCA, contact Head Teacher Charmaine Riva at 860-379-0708 or stop by and see the new additions in person.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
