Finale Under the Stars

The last Movie Under the Stars event was held at Eddie Collins Field in Millerton on Saturday, Aug. 28. Lakeville resident Troy Ramcharran and his company Handy Boys Enterprise organized fundraising and donated time and equipment for the evening.

There have been several similar events held over the summer, including movies and dancing lessons at the pavilion. Ramcharran estimated that 500 people attended the three events, including 150 at the last Movie Under the Stars.

“I have to say that our favorite part of this is to see the young kids and their parents on blankets in the grass, the many colors of lawn chairs and crackling of snack bags, Ramcharran said. “It brings me great joy to see moms and dads of all races playing around their kids before the movie starts.

Ramcharran stressed that more than a dozen local businesses were instrumental in sponsoring and supporting the events through donations and thanked the village of Millerton for giving their support to the cause.

Events Under the Stars, the blanket term referring to everything Ramcharran organizes, will be looking to expand next summer, but in the meantime is working on a special family event currently scheduled for Oct. 30 at Kaplan’s Farm south of the village.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
