Her House: Her style, her shop

MILLERTON — From the Internet to the Hotchkiss House to the big time: Her House is the newest addition to the Millerton business district. It recently moved into its permanent home sharing retail space with the Parlour boutique on the corner of Main and South Center streets.

Her House is a compilation of personal aesthetic and taste; it is essentially a representation of owner Anne Newburg, whose roots trace back to France and New York City, among others, before she settled in Millerton 13 years ago.

The most important quality to each of the items in Newburg’s store is that they are all off the beaten path and odds are you won’t be finding them in nearby shops any time soon. Many are made by artisans or small companies and even more are crafted in Europe.

â€œWe’re carrying things that can’t be found easily,†Newburg explained. “I think it came as a reaction to homogeny in the marketplace. Wherever you go you see the same things. I thought people would like more of a creative offering. But really, it’s just things that I love.â€

Her House started out as an Internet-based retail business in 2004 and has steadily grown. A few sample and holiday sales bolstered confidence in the idea of a brick-and-mortar operation, and Newburg temporarily moved into the Hotchkiss House a few months ago before arriving at her final destination at Parlour, officially opening last week.

â€œIt all came together very quickly ... maybe 12 hours,†Newburg said with a laugh. She highlighted the commonalities she shares with Parlour and its owner, Mimi Harney, but also pointed out that the two shops, while living in the same retail space, complement each other rather than offer the same product.

Her House is divided into “rooms,†explained Newburg, with items organized into categories like “For the library†and “For the kitchen.†Inventory changes and many items are one of a kind, but as Newburg explains, that’s the beauty of Her House.

The shop is located at 22 Main St. in Millerton. For now, it shares the same hours as Parlour (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) but as Newburg settles in to her new home, those may change. Visit herhouseshop.com for more information and a sampling of Anne Newburg’s favorite things.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
