Boat parade returns to Lake Wononscopomuc

LAKEVILLE — The Lakeville Lake Association of Lake Wononscopomuc revived an ages-old (but recently neglected) tradition of having a Fourth of July boat parade.

A small but energetic fleet launched from various points along the shore on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., some from the boat launch at the Grove, others from docks at private homes. A few pleasure boaters were swept up in the excitement, even if they had gone out on the water unaware that they would soon be part of a holiday flotilla.

Several of the boats were  piloted by relatives of Lake Association President Bill Littauer. Tino Galluzzo and several sailors decorated a pontoon boat and joined the fun.

Tom Dodge and Brandon Ryder piloted and decorated the SS Henry, in memory of the late Henry Dodge (their grandfather, and father of Grove manager Stacey Dodge), who died in January.  (Their boat was this year’s prizewinning entry.)

Mike Beck, the town’s senior services official, also decorated and piloted a pontoon boat.

The boat parade is expected to return next summer, and all are invited to take part. Anyone without a boat can inquire ahead of time about borrowing one at the Grove building.

And there is sunfish racing every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Grove. It is open to residents of all the area towns; bring your own Sunfish. The first race was held July 3. Thaddeus Thompson won.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
