Special town meeting June 25

SHARON — A special town meeting has been scheduled for Friday, June 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

The first item on the agenda is approval of a $7,000 state Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant for Sharon Day Care.

“They already have been approved for the grant from the state, First Selectman Bob Loucks said last week in an interview. “However, residents have to formally vote to accept it.

The second item asks town residents to approve new citation procedures for violations of Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Commission regulations, Historic District Commission regulations and Planning and Zoning Commission regulations.

“We never had citation procedures in town before for the Inland Wetlands and Historic District commissions, Loucks said.

The third item on the agenda, if passed by residents, would allow the town to appoint up to six additional members to the Board of Assessment Appeals for any assessment year.

It would also allow the selectmen to appoint alternates to the board.

“The board has run short of members, Loucks said. “We had a few members drop off. It gets hard when 100 or so people want their property taxes looked at.

Finally, a proposal to discontinue approximately 600 feet of Surdan Mountain Road will be up for a vote.

Loucks said the item was put on the agenda at the request of a property owner on the road.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
