Winsted Whalers shut out at home, 3-0

WINSTED — The Whalers hosted the Litchfield Cowboys at Walker Field Tuesday, June 8. The Cowboys held on to an early lead to take the road victory over Winsted.

Winsted entered the game in the second-place spot in a very tight North Division, while Litchfield limped onto Walker Field in last place. The Cowboys did not play like a struggling team, knocking in a quick run in the first inning and out-pitching the Whalers through three innings, holding on to a 1-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth.

Litchfield started to play small ball in the fourth, moving a base hit single into scoring position with a push bunt. Whaler starting pitcher Donny Crossman responded with a strikeout, but then gave up another base hit that came up as a run with a close play at home plate. Down by two, Crossman coughed up a long fly that turned into an RBI triple, giving the Cowboys a 3-0 lead heading into the second half of the fourth.

The Cowboys’ pitching and defense kept the Whalers shaky at the plate, allowing only a handful of hits and a few fielding errors, but refused to let any real offensive momentum generate.

The Whalers were able to produce some defensive energy in the top of the fifth, turning a double play off the hard work of Ricky Langer, while Crossman continually improved at the mound, striking out a total of five in a complete seven-inning performance.

Winsted was unable to respond in the late innings and took the 3-0 loss at home.

The Whalers drop to 4-3 while the Cowboys improve to 2-3.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
