Chichester named new principal at Northwestern

WINSTED — The Region 7 Board of Education has chosen a familiar face as the new principal of Northwestern Regional High School.

Kenneth Chichester, a current housemaster and veteran science teacher with the district, will take over the mantle of top administrator at the high school beginning July 1, Region 7 Superintendent of Schools Clint Montgomery announced at the board’s regular meeting following the budget public hearing Tuesday, April 19.

Chichester’s appointment was unanimously approved at the school board’s April 7 meeting, following an executive session at the end of the meeting.

“We really feel we have an excellent person for the job, Montgomery said.

Chichester, a Barkhamsted resident and former swim coach for the district, will replace current high school principal Wayne Conner, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.

Connor, who has spent nearly four decades as an educator, announced his retirement in November. His last day on the job will be June 31.

Connor spent the last 26 years as a member of the district’s staff. He has served as a teacher, housemaster and principal.

“You made an excellent choice, Connor said of Chichester’s selection.

The appointment is the conclusion to a selection process that began several months ago. The district first began sifting through applications in January, after a special principal search committee — made up of school board members, administrators, students and parents — was formed.

The committee received applications from educators working both inside and outside the district.

From there, a small group of candidates was selected to move forward to the next step, which involved an in-person meeting at the district with the interview committee.

Once the interviewing process was completed, the committee then narrowed the field of four or five candidates down to its final choice for the post. That recommended candidate was then presented to the school board for its final approval.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
