Baseball falls to Litchfield, but team shows promise

FALLS VILLAGE — Baseballs were the only things flying through the windy, blue sky as the Housatonic Mountaineers hosted the Litchfield Cowboys Wednesday, April 14.

Mark Dignacco was the starting pitcher for the Mountaineers and prevented the Cowboys from scoring in the first two innings. But in the end, the Cowboys won 9-0, and Housy dropped to 2-2 for the season.

Former HVRHS baseball coach and Pittsburg Pirate scout Ed Kirby was seen sitting behind the backstop commenting on the players’ performance, throwing in a, “good pitch, here and there.

Kirby coached greats such as Steve Blass, John Lamb, Art Lamb and Tom Parsons and likes what he sees in this year’s Housy team, comprised mostly of sophomores.

“I think they have a lot of promise, he said. “They have a good attitude and that make a big difference. If the rest of the pitching staff comes along, it would make it a good season.

Steve Blass, the pro ball player, will throw out the opening pitch of the North Canaan Little League season at the Steve Blass Field Saturday, April 24, at 11:30 a.m.

The hearing gave residents a chance to comment on a conditional approval for the transfer, which would be done at no cost to KAH. The proposal still faces a town meeting vote.
