String Quartets, a Singalong And One Stylish Rocker

   The continuing need for Chilean earthquake relief has prompted Munich’s Henschel Quartet to donate a portion of their upcoming concert proceeds to UNICEF.  Except for their cellist, all three are siblings, surely a rarity in the concert world. As part of the Northwest Corner Young Artist series, they will come to the Sharon Congregational Church April 17 at 5 p.m. with music by Haydn, Mozart and Schumann. They’ve performed internationally, with recent concerts at the Library of Congress, New York’s Frick Collection, and the Vatican. Tickets are $25 (cash or check) at the door, which includes a $10 contribution to UNICEF.

   Another benefit takes place April 18, 4 p.m., at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Litchfield, where the Litchfield County Choral Union will host a singalong of works by Aaron Copland. The music, under the direction of Jonathan F. Babbitt, includes “Simple Gifts,†“Promise of Living,†“4 Motets,†“At the River,†and “Zion’s Walls.†Music will be provided. A $10 donation is asked, with profits benefiting the Soup Kitchen of Torrington. Information at 860-868-0739.

   The Kent Singers will offer a diverse program of music from Palestrina to Don Jamison titled “How Can We Keep From Singing?†on May 1, 8 p.m., at Saint Andrew’s Church in Kent. Tickets $10/8. Children 12 and under free. For information, 860-619-8110 or kentsingers.org.

   With unusually literate songs and a style that is somewhere between Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, rocker Rob Morsberger (son of the eminent artist Philip Morsberger) previews the release of his upcoming CD with a return to Pawling’s Towne Crier, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. As a pianist he has played with Crash Test Dummies, Marshall Crenshaw, The Roches, Loudon Wainwright III, Dan Zanes, Jules Shear. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
