Silent auction April 23 for playground funds

SHARON — The Sharon Center School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) will hold a silent auction on Friday, April 23, at the Bok Gallery at TriArts.

The auction is a fundraiser for a new playground.

There will be performances at the auction by Swamp Yankee and The Tomahawks (which features three Sharon Center students Julien Del Tufo, Henry Cousins, and Patrick Purdy).

The school’s current playground was built in 1993 and is made of wood. The PTO has been working with Childscapes, a playground manufacturer in Marshfield, Mass., to design a new play area. Fundraising  began in November. The original plan was for the PTO to raise $64,000 by this spring to purchase the equipment.

However, according to PTO President Marilyn Yerks, not enough money has been raised.

“We’re at $21,000 in funds raised, she said. “The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation just awarded us a grant of a $1,000. We are now hoping by the summer that we can get the new playground installed. The current one is at the end of its time and needs to be replaced.

Auction items include a bear sculpture, golf lessons with a professional donated by the Sharon Country Club, a private tour of the Sharon Audubon aviaries and two tickets to TriArts.

Admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door.

The Bok Gallery is at 49 Amenia Road.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
