Winsted auxiliary thrift shop celebrates one year in new location

WINSTED — Volunteers at the Auxiliary Thrift Shop on Willow Street happily celebrated their first anniversary in the store’s current location this week.

Operated by Winsted’s Auxiliary for Community Health, the store moved out of its former location in the basement of the Winsted Health Center on March 3 last year. “This is the best move we’ve ever made, said Auxiliary President Milly Hudak. “There is more parking and more visibility. We are busy all the time.

Hudak noted that the auxiliary raises money for a variety of health-related services and equipment, ranging from scholarships to defibrillators and exercise equipment for rehabilitation programs. “The more money we make, the more we can give back to the community.

Hudak said she personally reloaded the thrift shop’s shelf of DVDs this past weekend, adding more than 300 titles to the inventory. Clothing, household items, books and electronic equipment are available throughout the store.

“Donations are always coming in, and we welcome them any time, Hudak said. “If someone wants to come in during off hours they can call to arrange a drop-off.

The Auxiliary Thrift shop is located at 120 Willow St., in the shopping plaza anchored by Levine Auto Parts. The store can be reached by calling 860-379-1997.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
