Woman's Club to get 'Under Our Skin'

MILLERTON — The Sharon Woman’s Club and the Film Works Forum at The Moviehouse in Millerton are sponsoring a showing of “Under Our Skin,†a documentary on Lyme disease.

The movie will be shown on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at The Moviehouse on Main Street in Millerton and will include a talk with movie producer and director Andy Wilson.

Woman’s Club member and event organizer Cynthia Conklin said the movie addresses the different sides of Lyme disease, including the medical mysteries and rhetoric surrounding it.

“In the medical world there are two very distinct sides to this issue,†Conklin said. “One side believes that the disease calls for short-term treatment. Another side, which is the side of the Lyme disease-literate doctors, prefers long-term treatments with antibiotics. But insurance companies do not like the idea of long-term treatment, which is a problem for patients.â€

The movie also documents the lives of patients who have to deal with the disease, including their dealings with the health-care system.

“No matter what one’s opinion of the disease is, this movie is worthy of their consideration,†Conklin said. “It represents sides of the issue that have not been seen before and it courageously attacks the subject.â€

Admission is free to the movie and talk.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
