Gilbert girls snap losing streak on Senior Night, 54-32

WINSTED — The Gilbert girls basketball team picked a suitable evening to snap a nine-game skid with a 54-32 victory over Wolcott Tech on Senior Night Tuesday, Feb. 9. Wolcott Tech remains winless late in the season — a position last year’s Lady Jackets found themselves unable to escape.

Following a brief ceremony honoring Gilbert’s seniors, Courtney Cesca and Francesca Marino, the Jackets quickly went to work. Marino tallied the first points of the evening. Gilbert kept defensive pressure high early in the opening quarter, cutting off the passing lanes and forcing turnovers. Courtney Hoxie snagged possession late and sank the buzzer beater to give Gilbert a 12-3 lead at the end of the first.

The Wildcats continued to struggle in the second, repeatedly handing over possession and giving Gilbert plenty of offensive chances. The Jackets managed to finish a decent percentage of those opportunities to keep the lead far out of reach, which allowed Gilbert head coach Paul Grossman to give his reserves a great deal of court time. Those younger Jackets looked remarkably strong late in the second quarter and kept Gilbert ahead 31-8 heading into the halftime break.

Grossman sent the reserves back out in the second half of the third quarter to face a Wolcott Tech team that was beginning to find room offensively. The Wildcats chipped away the Jackets’ lead, trailing 37-19 into the fourth.

Gilbert’s starting line opened up the fourth quarter and began to play fantastic basketball, finding each other with quick, clean passes to set up plays that they finished nicely. The reserve Jackets took the to court once again, looking more like their solid second-quarter selves, to finish out a fantastic Senior Night effort with a 54-32 Gilbert win.

Every player on the Jacket bench scored, and senior Courtney Cesca led the effort with nine. Shannon Tuozzo and Jen Fritch had eight apiece, and Nicole Crossman added seven. Gilbert’s record improves to 4-13.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
