Hearing for subdivision on Trescott Hill is Feb. 17

NORTH CANAAN — A public hearing on a  proposed subdivision has been set for Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. On the agenda is a proposed subdivision on Trescott Hill Road.

Attorney Linda Patz, on behalf of property owner Mary Ann Marchant, presented the subdivision application at the Jan. 20 Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) meeting.

She described an 18.7-acre unimproved parcel proposed to be separated into three lots. It would include a 2-acre building lot and a 1.5-acre building lot with frontage.

The remaining 15.2 acres would be left as is and accessible via a 35-foot-wide strip fronting on Trescott Hill Road.

There is a potential issue there of this being a re-subdivision, which will be looked at by P&Z during its deliberations. The matter will be on the agenda of the regular meeting, which will follow the Feb. 17 public hearing.

P&Z members clearly expected comments from a rather large crowd at the January meeting. There were no other applicants scheduled to be heard. Chair Peter Brown advised them there would be a public comment portion at the end of the meeting. However, once the subdivision application was presented and the hearing date set, the room cleared out.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
