Metz offers to buy road, troubled bridge

SHARON — Sharon resident James Metz is offering to buy a portion of Mitcheltown Road from the town, a move that could eliminate the need to repair a bridge that has been plagued with problems.

The Board of Selectmen considered the offer at a special meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

First Selectman Bob Loucks read a written offer from Metz, who has property on the road. He would pay the town $500,000 for a portion of the road that passes through his property. That section includes the bridge. Mitcheltown Road is currently closed to vehicles because the bridge needs repairs.

In August, a vertical crack was noticed on a wall on the eastern side of the span.

In September, the bridge was closed to public traffic indefinably after a second crack was discovered by WMC Engineers from Newington.

In his offer, Metz said the town would be given access to the road east of the closed bridge for access and maintenance purposes as necessary.

Any sale would have to be approved by a town meeting vote.

The selectmen will review Metz’ offer at the next selectmen’s meeting.

About growing up in Carmel, New York, Troutbeck’s executive chef Vincent Gilberti said he was fortunate to have a lot of family close by, and time together was always centered around food.

His grandparents in White Plains always made sure to have a supply of cured meats, olives, cheeses and crusty bread during their weekend visits. But it wasn’t until his family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, when he was 16 that his passion for food really began. It was there that he joined the German Club, whose partnership with Johnson & Wales University first introduced him to cooking.
