Comcast expands coverage

SHARON — Comcast Cable will be expanding its services to 45 more homes here.

At a special meeting of the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday, Dec. 15, First Selectman Bob Loucks read a letter from John Bairos, manager of government and community relations for Comcast, explaining the expansion project.

The company is installing 4.49 miles of coaxial and fiber cable along East Street, Surdan Mountain Road, Bowne Road, Vanishing Brook Road and Tichnor Road.

Once that work is done, residents on those streets will be able to get digital cable and high-speed Internet service.

Selectman John Mathews gave credit for the expansion to Sharon resident Thaddeus Gray and the Sharon Association.

“This is a project they started three years ago and [Gray] did a ton of work on this, Mathews said. “He should be commended.

Selectman Meg Szalewicz said she would consult with Gray and state Rep. Roberta Willis (D-64) to bring Comcast services to other “dark areas in Sharon.

“There are other areas including Mole Hill, Dawn Hill, Herb Road and River Road, Szalewicz said. “My vision is to have Internet access for all of these residents.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
