Area food banks

TRI-STATE REGION — The holidays are coming, which can be a time of celebration for many. It can also be a time of stress and hardship. This year, with the economy in such bad shape, that’s especially true.

People throughout the Tri-state region have expressed a need for assistance as the holidays approach. Fortunately, there are numerous food banks. Following below is a list.

The Millerton Food Pantry, Millerton Presbyterian Church, PO Box 929, Millerton, NY 12546. The phone number is 518-789-3077.

Vines and Branches, Immaculate Conception Church, 4 Lavelle Road, Amenia, NY 12501. The phone number is 845-373-8193.

The Food of Life Food Pantry, St. Thomas Church, 50 Leedsville Road, Amenia, NY 12501. The phone number is 845-373-9161.

The Pine Plains Food Locker, Methodist Church of Pine Plains, 4930 Route 199, Pine Plains, NY 12567.

The Dover Food Pantry, St. James Episcopal Church, Reimer Avenue, Dover, NY 12522. The phone number is 845-877-6046.

Roe Jan Food Pantry, Hillsdale Methodist Church, PO Box 343, Hillsdale, NY 12595. On call five  days a week at 518-325-4986 or 518-325-5613.

OWL’s Kitchen, PO Box 153, Lakeville, CT 06039. The phone number is 860-435-2529.

Donations may also be  sent to the Sunday in the Country Food Drive, PO Box 789, Millerton, NY 12546 or to WHDD Studios, 61 Main St., Sharon, CT 06069. Funds raised will be used to buy Christmas dinners, which will be shared among the various food banks mentioned above, as well as some food pantries in Massachusetts.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
