New repair shop geared up

WASSAIC — With a no-frills-attached mentality, KB Performance is a new auto repair garage looking to make a name for itself.

The shop in its current location has been open since March, but co-owners Ed Bishop and Scott Kilmer have been running it as a side business for nearly four years.

Originally focusing on race cars, KB Performance is now a full-time auto repair shop and registered automotive and motorcycle inspection site. The crew can do minor auto-body work and auto repair welding services to steel and aluminum. They also sell used auto parts and tires.

The two-man crew has plenty of experience to bring to the table; Bishop has 10 years as an auto mechanic under his belt and Kilmer has been a mechanic in the area for 30, previously working for the Millerton Service Center, Basil’s Auto Sales and Service and Jack’s Auto Service.

Their new location is on Route 22, just south from Jack’s Auto, and Kilmer said many people still mistake KB Performance for the junkyard it used to be. Once the word gets out about the shop though, the two are confident that will change.

"This is a much better spot for us," Bishop explained. "There’s a lot of traffic through here. We’re just happy to open up and get a full-time garage open."

KB Performance is located at 4196 Route 22 in Wassaic. The office is located around the corner of the garage on the right. Shop hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays by appointment. The phone number is 845-789-1319.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
