'Which roll is best for you?'

PINE PLAINS — Stomach rumbling? Maybe your decision just got a bite easier; a new sandwich shop has rolled into town and owners Rod Quijada and Tammy Plassmann say they’re serving up enough of a variety to satisfy the breakfast, lunch and dinner needs of the community.

Quijada recently moved to the area with Plassmann, his wife-to-be, from Wappingers.

"We love the town," he said. "It’s quiet and a small community. But I asked, why isn’t there a deli in town? You know everybody wants one."

Hard Roll Express officially opened Oct. 29. With its long hours of service, the shop is looking to target, well, just about everyone.

"Everything shuts down on weekends here," Quijada said. "We’re open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. And we’re only closed four days a year."

The owners were also quick to point out that it’s not just a sandwich shop. There’s hot food, desserts, fresh pastries, soup and salads. And for breakfast you can even get waffles and egg sandwiches. Grinders and wraps are available, and there’s sub catering. Finally, Hard Roll Express is also a deli that offers all of its Boar’s Head cold cuts by the pound.

Quijada said the community support has been fantastic since opening day.

"It was just me and [Tammy] starting out. The first day we sold out of everything," he said. "We already have four staff now."

Hard Roll Express offers free wireless Internet to customers and accepts Visa and MasterCard. The shop can be reached at 518-771-3100 and is located at 7711 South Main St., right across the road from Stewart’s Shop.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
