Donald J. Wallace

EAST CANAAN — Donald J. Wallace, 44, of Norfolk Road, died Nov. 18, 2009, at his home after battling a long illness. He was the husband of Cynthia “Sam� (McLoughlin) Wallace.

Donnie was born April 18, 1965, in Norwich, Conn., the son of William Wallace Sr. of North Canaan and the late Isabel (O’Connor) Wallace, who died in April 2009.

Donnie worked for his father at Bill’s Refuse Service as a refuse collector. He worked through July of this year before he had to retire due to his health. He had worked for his dad for more than 20 years. Donnie was a graduate of Oliver Wolcott Technical School in Torrington, and attended Texas Tech University for three years.

Donnie was most at home outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He worked in Montana as a hunting guide. He loved old muscle cars and working on crosswords with Sam.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by his brother, William Wallace Jr. of Merrimac, Fla.; his sister, Kelly Paine of Taconic, Conn.; two stepchildren, Amy Cooper of Torrington and Amanda Cooper of Dunellen, Fla.; and several aunts and uncles in Norwich.

Funeral services were held Nov. 25 at the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home, North Canaan. Flowers may be sent, or contributions in Donnie’s memory may be sent to Linda Tiramani, ASPCA Special Giving, 520 8th Ave., 7th Floor, NY, NY 10018. Include Donnie’s name in the memo line along with your contribution, which should be made payable to the ASPCA.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
