Chore Service receives $10,000 grant

SHARON — Earlier this month, the Chore Service, a Sharon-based service that assists both the elderly and handicapped with tasks, received a $10,000 grant from the Union Savings Bank Foundation. The service, which was created in 1993, serves North Canaan, Cornwall, Falls Village, Kent, Norfolk, Salisbury and Sharon. Services available include light and heavy housekeeping, shopping, laundry, cooking, yard maintenance and minor home repairs.

Service director Ella Clark said their clients have increased in the past three years from 195 to 262 residents. The service’s employment budget has also gone up from $220,495 to $298,302.

“This generous grant will cover direct services for two weeks, Clark said. “This is particularly helpful at a time when clients on fixed incomes cannot afford higher contributions to the service. Also, individual donations are down and the state is cutting back on funding from home care even as we speak.
