Webutuck drops out in second round sectionals

WEBUTUCK — After a rain-soaked 3-1 win over Pine Plains on Oct. 28, the Webutuck High School boys varsity soccer team advanced to the second round of sectional play before losing to top-seeded Rhinebeck 2-0.

In the Pine Plains win, goals were scored by Steven Hutchinson and Pat McCaffrey, who netted twice.

In the Rhinebeck match, played on Oct. 30, the top-ranked team proved too strong for Webutuck, although both head coach Henry Pollinger and assistant coach Aaron Kelly were happy with the team’s effort. Webutuck lost twice to Rhinebeck during the regular season, 5-0 and 4-0.

“Every year Rhinebeck is tough, Pollinger said. “We just can’t seem to score on them. But we did play a really great game, both sides did, and there wasn’t one that was dominating.

Pollinger recognized Eric Betschart, Matt Matteo, McCaffrey and Hutchinson for their exceptional sectional play.

Webutuck has three graduating seniors this year: Richard Peck, Justin Lind and McCaffrey. Pine Plains has eight: Trevor Barr, Mark Flinn, Jordi Hernandez, Ralph Jusi, Eric Leubner, Arkhip McEneaney, Corey Weaver and Greyson Wheeler.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
