Rain holds off, car wash is a success

FALLS VILLAGE — The rain held off on Saturday long enough for  members of the Rotary Interact Club at Housatonic Valley Regional High School to hold a car wash.

This was the  most successful car wash the group has held, raising about $600. The club members, mostly sophomores and juniors, “worked beautifully together, never complained and supported each other throughout the event,â€ reported Inge Dunham, a Rotary member and adviser to the club.

Helping attract motorists to the parking lot in front of the Lakeville Hose Company firehouse was volunteer and Millerton resident Leo Flood.

The money raised at the car wash will help pay for shelter boxes to be used in disaster zones around the world such as the Philippines.

“Each shelter box can sleep 10 people and each one comes with all the gear they need, including sleeping bags, water pills and cooking utensils, Dunham said. “They can provide emergency shelter for as long as six or even 10 months.

“Shelter box volunteers were among the first on the scene after Hurrican Katrina. Thousands of shelter boxes were provided and they were all  funded through donations.â€

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
