Sandy Dittmar

Lakeville—Sandy Dittmar (born Eunice Farnam Murray), 84, died July 10, 2009, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie after a six-week illness.

Sandy was born June 11, 1925, in Syracuse, N.Y. She attended Cornell University and the University of North Carolina, and graduated from University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1979, at the age of 64.

She was a classically trained pianist and organist, and regularly played at the North Canaan Congregational Church. She was a lifelong fabric collector and enjoyed making doll clothes, women’s apparel and a myriad of other items.

Sandy lived in Lakeville, where she could regularly be seen at home working in her garden. She was also a world traveler, off to such places as China and South America in recent years.

Sandy was predeceased by her mother, Lucile W. Murray, and her sister, Holley Palmer Daboll, both of Lakeville.

She is survived by her sons, Alan B. Dittmar (and his wife, Ulla) of Ayden, N.C., Timothy H. Dittmar of Burgaw, N.C., and Craig L. Dittmar (and his wife, Beth) of Holly Springs, N.C.; her daughters, Leslie G. Dittmar of Lakeville and Meredith L. Dittmar of Annandale, Va; and a grandson, Grant M. Vickers of Santa Fe, N.M.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
