NORTH CANAAN — By a vote of 6-1, the North Canaan Board of Education (NCES) approved a plan to regionalize the middle school sports program. The vote was held at the board’s regular meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14, and came after a lengthy discussion of the proposal initiated by Region One Athletic Director Anne MacNeil.

Ceremony conveys honor for veterans

NORTH CANAAN — By the time the crowds gathered for the parade and service at the Doughboy Monument, many veterans had been observing Memorial Day for hours, visiting 12 cemeteries and a nursing home from the early morning hours.
The fast-paced tour of graveside flag ceremonies was completed just in time to join the parade. Smiling faces and children waving flags provided the uplift they needed at that point.

Savings in store as Fire District gets nod on budget

NORTH CANAAN — Close scrutiny and fortunate circumstance have brought the Canaan Fire District (CFD) safely through a worrisome financial time — and left enough resources to address a number of needs, leave taxes at the same level and reduce the sewer usage fee.
Fire District officials and a quorum of 15 district residents met May 15 at North Canaan Town Hall, where budgets for fiscal year 2012-13 were unanimously approved. The fiscal year begins July 1.

Head-on crash in North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — State Police continue to investigate a serious accident that occurred on Clayton Road on Saturday night, May 26, involving a local teen, a toddler and a West Hartford woman who was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to police at Troop B, Robert Gulotta, 17, was driving west on Clayton Road. Kathleen Mallory, 25, was driving east. At about 10:30 p.m., just north of Cemetery Road, both vehicles crossed the double yellow line and collided head-on.
Gulotta was in his 1991 Ford F350 pickup truck and was not injured.

Troopers honored for double arrest

NORTH CANAAN — Two state troopers assigned to Troop B in North Canaan have earned awards for outstanding service, according to a press release from the state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.
On routine patrol, Trooper First Class Thomas Calo located a vehicle on Route 44 in North Canaan that was reportedly involved in an armed robbery in Salisbury during which two males displayed firearms. Trooper Calo became involved in a high-speed motor vehicle pursuit as the vehicle attempted to elude him.

Missing man found standing in swamp

NORTH CANAAN — An 87-year-old Geer Village resident who went missing early on the morning of May 27 was found nearly 10 hours later, waist deep in a swamp.
Leonard Trachtenburg, who State Police said has dementia and hearing loss, was hospitalized after his rescue, suffering from exposure and hypothermia. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Trachtenburg was described in a police missing person report as a loner who was unhappy being in a facility. He was discovered missing from his room at about 6 a.m. Sunday during a routine check by staff at the South Canaan Road facility.

Jeep owners go topless at Brewer Brothers

NORTH CANAAN — Do Jeep owners love their Jeeps, or what?
The original SUV had its day May 19 at the fifth annual Go Topless Day, held worldwide and at the Brewer Brothers dealership on Railroad Street.
The tops came off on a beautifully sunny day. Jeeps arrived by the dozens, outfitted for all sorts of recreational uses, including an orange Wrangler towing a jet ski painted to match. Some arrived covered in mud, a badge of honor in the off-roading world.

Geer is closer to adding new Beckley apartments

NORTH CANAAN — A special permit for an expansion to Beckley House at Geer was unanimously approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) on May 14.
Geer Corporation is poised to add 10 units to the 24-apartment subsidized housing for seniors. It will use $1,672,000 in federal grant funding. Since it opened 10 years ago, Beckley House has continuously had a waiting list.

For North Canaan, mistrust led to the defeat of the regional budget

NORTH CANAAN — A May 15 town meeting to vote on proposed town and local school budgets for 2012-13 was convened and quickly adjourned. The only action was a vote to re-convene on June 5. The reason was the defeat of the Region One School District budget (see story, Page A1). The proposal may change on its way to a second referendum May 31, and could have a significant impact on overall spending here.

NORTH CANAAN — Those who make it back from military service abroad can find comfort and an extended “family” at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post. These facilities quickly become centers of their communities. They were, and still are in many cases, where weddings, graduation parties, band concerts, picnics and horseshoe tournaments are held.
